Professor Maureen Isoken Ebomoyi, nee Evbuomwan was born into the family of Late Sir A. A. Evbuomwan and Lady E. O. Evbuomwan in Benin City. She attended Emotan Primary School, and then Federal Government Girls’ College, both in Benin City. She then went to the University of Ibadan, Ibadan, where she obtained B.Sc. (Hons) and M.Sc. degrees in Physiology in 1986 and 1988 respectively. She did her NYSC primary assignment at the Physiology Department, University of Ibadan (1986 – 1987), where she was thereafter employed as a teaching assistant during her M.Sc. programme, a position she held until she was appointed an Assistant lecturer in the University of Benin in September 1989. She was promoted lecturer II in October 1992 and rose through the ranks to become a full professor in 2012.
She travelled to London in 1996 to live and explore research opportunities, returning back to Uniben in 1999 to complete her Ph.D. program, having also obtained a certificate in Basic Computing from Greenhill College, Middlesex, London. She obtained her Ph.D. degree in Physiology in 2002. She is a distinguished international scholar with over 60 publications in local and foreign journals, and is a reviewer to many international journals. She has made presentations at several local and international conferences, workshops and seminars in Nigeria, Asia, United Kingdom, Middle East, etc. She is a recipient of many awards and recognitions and has supervised many students up to the Ph.D. level. She is external examiner and assessor to some first and second generation universities and others, and is a member of several scientific societies and organizations, such as physiological Society of Nigeria, The Physiological Society (London), Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) etc.
Prof. Ebomoyi was Head, Department of Physiology from July 2009 – June 2012, and Dean, School of Basic medical Sciences, University of Benin from July 2014 – July 2016. She was appointed pioneer Dean, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, Edo University Iyamho (Now Edo State University, Uzairue) from 2017 – 2018 (during her sabbatical). She was a Hall Warden, Clinical Students’ Hostel from 2004 – 2011, and has been a member of the University Senate, College Academic Board, Appointment and promotions committees at all levels and several other University, College and School committees, boards and investigation panels, such as University Admission Board, Scholarships and Prizes committee, University Committee on equipments, Board of Postgraduate School, etc. She has been elected Congregation or Senate representative in some boards and committees, such as Uniben Enterprises, Central Entrance Examinations Committee, etc. She was appointed Desk Officer/Director, Sustainable Development Desk Office (SDDO) in March 2020, a platform the current University administration has used to request government intervention in Uniben. In March 2021, she was elected into the Governing Council of the University of Benin, and appointed Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Uniben on 15 th March 2022.
She belongs to some societies in the Catholic Church and is a chorister.
She is happily married to Mr. Reckins O. Ebomoyi, an Agriculturalist and an alumnus of Uniben, and blessed with children and a wonderful family.
