The B.A. Programme in French aims at providing students with a sound grasp of written and oral French and a general familiarity with the culture and civilization of France and Francophone countries. Students are expected to maintain a balance between these aspects of French studies throughout the course . In their year one, two and three, students are expected to study other approved languages offered in the Department- (German, Russian,Spanish,Portugese) or in the Faculty as well as courses in General Studies and CED. They may also choose to combine their study of French with another subject at degree level.

The duration of B.A.degree programme is 3 years for Direct Entry Students and 4 years for students entering Year one through JAMB examinations, including Syllabus "B" alternative programme.

Admission Requirements:

UME Option:

Candidates seeking admission into the Four-Year Degree Programme should possess any of the following  qualifications :

At least five Ordinary Level credit passes in WASC , WAEC, SSCE/GCE NECO SSCE or at least five merit-level passes in the Teachers Grade II (TC II ) examinations or its recognized equivalent s at not more than two sittings . The subjects should include English Language and French.

Note: UME subjects:

(a) Use of English.

(b) Any combination of three subjects either in Arts,Sciences or Social Sciences.

Candidates for syllabus 'B' programme need not have previous knowledge of French provided that they have credit-level passes in at least  one Arts subject and four other subjects one of which should be of which should be English Language in WASC , WAEC -SSCE / GCE, NECO-SSCE or at least five merit-level passes in the Teachers Grade II (TC II) examinations two of which should be Arts subjects at not more than two sittings.

Direct entry Option:

In addition to the above requirement for the UME option, candidates who possess any of the following qualification may be considered for admission:

(i) At least two Advanced Level passes in the General Certificate of Education ( GCE) or Higher School Certificate  (HSC) or its recognized equivalent at not more than two-sittings in the relevant Arts subjects.

(ii) At least a credit-level pass in a Diploma in the relevant subject from the University of Benin or its equivalent subject from the University of Benin or its equivalent (Upper credit) from any recognized University .

(iii) Nigerian Certificate of Education (NCE) with at least a credit -level pass in English / French from  a recognized College of Education . In addition ,candidates should have at least an overall merit level pass .

(iv) A Diploma ( Diplome D'Etudes Francaises 3e Degre) of the Alliance Francaise, Nigerian Frenc h Village , or its equivalent from a recognized position.
