The University of Benin, Benin City on Tuesday, 29^th June, 2010 carried out an inauguration ceremony of the Local Organizing Committee for the Nigerian Universities Games Association (NUGA), to be hosted by the institution later in the year.

Performing the inauguration ceremony of the 16 members committee, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin, Professor Osayuki Godwin Oshodin (JP) stressed the importance of the committee, which  he said was very dear to his heart. He reiterated the fact that he had no regret over the composition of the committee, since most of them are active sports men and administrators of sports. The Chairman of the Committee, he added, is an accomplished sports man and possess basic qualification in sports. According to him, "with this pedigree, there is no reason why the Committee should not succeed, as the Chairman, without doubt, has the ability to garther all the needed support to make the hosting of the competition successful".

Responding, the Chairman of the local organizing committe, Professor Chike Okolocha, thanked the Vice-Chancellor, on behalf of other members of the committee for the confidence reposed on them. He stated clearly that he had no doubt that the assignment was going to be most challenging. He acknowledge the fact that though time is short, they are going to tap from the Vice-Chancellor's reservoir of knowledge, as a well known sports man and administrator. He expressed the hope that at the end of the day, their best was going to be accepted as good enough, and would be a reference point for many years to come. Professor Okolocha who was once commissioner for Lands, Surveys and Urban Development in Delta State is currently the Dean of Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Benin. He is the incumbent president of Christian Sports Club, Benin City, and a golfer. Other members of the committe are Oakhire Abdul Rasheed, Agunu Ruth, Ikponmwosa Edoba, Ojome Ikomi, West Salami, Mr. Okosun, Kolade V. Ikeafe, Dr. Egor, Mr. Odiagbe, Hon. Aiya Edokpolor, special assistant to Edo State Governor on Sports, and Barr. Richmond Omagbemi as Secretary.

Amongst those present at the inauguaration ceremony which was held at the Senate Chanber of the University were, the Registrar of the University, Mrs G.O Ogboghodo, who was represented by Emeka Nwandu, Deputy Registrar Personnel, the University Bursar, Dr. (Mrs.) M.I Nwoye, and University Librarian, Deacon S.A Ogunrombi.

Meanwhile, as part of preparation for the successful hosting of the Games the University of Benin has commenced the process of rehabilatating its sporting facilities, while contractors to handle various projects are being pre-qualified through open bidding.

It is worthy of note that the last time N.U.G.A games was hosted by the University of Benin was in 1980.
