The Mecklenburg County in Charlotte, North Carolina, United States (US), has declared June 23 the University of Benin Alumni Association (UBAA) day ahead of the siting of a branch of the association in the place.
President of the association, Chief Richard Ahonaruogho, who made this known at the opening of the Alunmi Centre at the UNIBEN campus, said it was a thing of joy to have a branch abroad.
He said the revival of dormant branches, and the opening of new ones were being actively pursued, pointing out that the relevance of the alumni association in the growth and development of its alma mater could not be overemphasised.
Ahonaruogho praised Access Bank Plc for undertaking the construction of the centre and furnishing it fully with internet facilities as well as donating a 16-seater air conditioned Toyota Hiace Bus to the association.
He spoke of the need to expose members of the university community to happenings in other parts of the world in order to update their knowledge, pointing out that US was willing to assist in that regard if the necessary structures were put in place.
"American universities are willing to facilitate exchange programmes with our university but for lack of suitable residency for such visiting scholars in our university. This has also in the reverse affected our scholars from benefiting from such exchange programmes. A case in point is the inability of Fullbright scholars to carry out their sabbaticals in our university," he said.
Also speaking on the occasion. Access Bank Managing Director, Mr Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede pledged that his organisation's resolve to transform the fortunes of UNIBEN and Edo State in particular would manifest soon as attested to by the records.
