Philosophy and Goals
It has a primary objective to train the much-needed graduate teachers for post primary institutions all over the country. It started as a single department located at the Ekenwan Campus of the University. The Department of Education as it was known then had two units – (1) Education Administration and Foundations (2) Educational Psychology and Curriculum Studies. The first Dean of the Faculty was Mr. G.N. Enobakhare who acted from September 1974 to June 1975. At its inception, a B.Sc. (Science Education was introduced). There were only four foundation academic staff. The Institute of Education was established in 1976 to prepare grade two teachers for the Associateship Certificate in Education (ACE) and a Postgraduate Diploma in Education for non-professional graduates. The following year, 1977, the Centre for Extra-Mural Studies and Extension Services was established to offer services to interested members of the public. Also in the same year the Department of Physical and Health Education was created. The Department of Vocational and Technical Education was created during 1989/90 academic year. The first set of graduates of 14, all in Science Education was produced by the Faculty at the January 1978 Convocation
