Philosophy and Religions

Brief History of  the  Department

The Department of Philosophy and Religious formally came into existence in October , 2006. Before this time, the University of Benin had offered the B.A. Degree in Philosophy ( from the 1995/96 session) and in Religious Studies ( 1997/98 session).

The programmes were then housed in the Department of History. With effect from the 2006/2007 session, the B.A .Religious Studies programme become s re-designated as B.A Religions.

Aims and Objectives

The Department aims at two things amongst others:

  • To equip Philosophy majors with the necessary philosophical skill through  detailed exposure to inner logic, its universal emergence , and its designed to help students develop their own capacity to reflect intelligently on questions of fundamental and lasting significance focusing on the ideas of   some of the world's leading philosophers as well as on an empirical understanding of their own society. Special efforts will be made to explore and various ramifications of philosophical thought.
  • To  acquaint Religions majors intimately with the methods of  academic analyses in religion, so that they become open to communitarian, cultural , moral and social values. This is against the backdrop of the multi-faceted nature of religious interests and practices in the contemporary Nigerian society.
