Accounting
History
Although the Department formally came into its own only in October , 1981 as an offspring of the department of Business Administration , the accounting subject areas this University can claim to be as old as the Faculty of Social Sciences itself. A sub-unit , first within the Department of Economics and business Studies ( from 1975 - 1977), and later the Department of Business Administration from (1977-1981). However, between 1981/1982 the Department of Accounting has awarded the degree of Bachelor of Science Honours in accounting yearly.
Objectives of Department
The Department aims to produce high level accounting personnel and contribute through research and publications towards the growth of accounting knowledge and the improvement of the quality of professional accounting practice in Nigeria and on the international scene. The department has the following objectives:
1. The continuing searches to expand the scope of application discipline in order to promote and enhance national economic development . In this regard the Department seeks to stimulate interest , and provide needed leadership, in research and experimentation in all branched of accountancy.
2. They needed the accountant to see himself as a member of the organiszation , a team whose collaborative effort is required in order to achieve organizational objectives. This requires that the accountant should have reasonable grounding in all aspects of economics and management in addition to his specialization.
3. The need to inculcate the requisite attitudes , ethics and skills of professionalism. To this end , student and staff interaction with the everyday practitioner is encouraged and facilitated.
