PHYTOCHEMICAL ANALYSIS AND INHIBITORY EFFECT OF PYRENACANTHA STAUDTII LEAF EXTRACT ON ISOLATED RAT UTERUS

Pyrenanacantha staudtii leaf is used ethnomedicinally in Nigeria and some African countries for the prevention of miscarriage (threatened abortion) in pregnant women. The study was therefore aimed at validating the claim by the traditional herbal practitioners. The crude methanolic extract was subjected to isolated rat uterine preparation in an organ bath with oxytocin and salbutamol as controls.Both oxytocin and the spontaneous contractions of the
uterus were recorded with an Ugo basil  recorder.

ISOLATION AND CHRACTERIZATION OF HEXAHYDROX FROM PYRENACANTHA STAUDTII HUTCH LEAF AND EFFECT ON ISOLATED RAT UTERUS

The ethnomedicinal use of Pyrenacantha staudtii leaf as remedy against threatened abortion was evaluated through activity guided fractionation techniques on rat isolated uterus in our earlier study.One of the biologically active fraction was subjeccetd to reversed phase lobar column C-18 chromatography with different solvent systems and other chromatographic methods. The structure of the pure compound isolated was characterized by spectroscopic techniques such as IR, NMR, MS and elemental analysis.

ISOLATION AND CHRACTERIZATION OF 3-CARBOMETHOXYPYRIDINE FROM THE LEAVES OF PYRENACANTHA STAUDTII HUTCH AND DALZ ICACINACEAE

Pyrenacantha staudtii is a medicinal plant used widely in the West African sub-region particularly in Nigeria for the treatment of threatened abortion and dysmenorrea. This study reports for the first time the chemical isolation and chraraterization of 3- carbomethoxypyridine from the active fractions of the methanolic extract of Pyrenacantha staudtii leaves.

INHIBITORY EFFECT OF 3-CARBOMETHOXYPYRIDINE AND 3- CARBOBUTOXYPYRIDINE ON ISOLATED RAT UTERUS

3-carbomethoxypyridine was isolated and characterized from the leaves of Pyrenacantha staudtii Hutch and Dalz Icacinaceae, in our earlier study and was found to possess inhibitory activity on the isolated rat uterus. In order to study the structure activity relationship, derivatives of CMP were obtained synthetically, purified  and characterized by spectroscopic techniques such as infra red (IR), nuclea magnetic resonance (H and  C  NMR) and mass spectrometry (MS).
