MAXILLARY HERPES ZOSTER WITH CORNEAL INVOLVEMENT IN A HIV POSITIVE PREGNANT WOMAN

Corneal involvement in maxillary herpes zoster is very rare. This report presents the case of a 32 years old 7 months pregnant para 2+1 female, who presented with vesiculopapular rashes with hyperpigmented crusts over the maxillary area of the face on the left side with periocular oedema, conjunctivitis and mild punctate keratitis in the left eye. She was HIV positive and was on treatment with the highly active antiretroviral therapy. She was treated with topical and systemic acyclovir with rapid resolution of the ocular features.

SEXUAL VIOLENCE AND HIV/AIDS IN SUB – SAHARAN AFRICA – AN INTIMATE LINK

Sexual violence is an epidemic that often overlaps with the AIDS pandemic and is often a cause and consequence of the spread of HIV/AIDS amongst women and girls. Presently, half or more of the 40 million people infected with HIV in the world are women. Millions of those infected are aged 15-24 years and have suffered some form of intimate partner violence.

The prevalence of HIV infections in Nigeria has been on a steady rise within the past decade. By the end of 1999, 2.7 million Nigerians were living with HIV/AIDS, translating into 400,000 new cases since the end of 1997.

EXPANDING THE NATIONAL RESPONSE (S) TO HIV/AIDS, LAW AND HUMAN RIGHTS IN NIGERIA

Improving the social and legal status of HIV-affected populations including their human rights are necessary undertakings in combating the HIV/AIDS scourge in Nigeria. Vulnerability to thedisease depends to a large extent  on the legal, social and economic conditions in many countries.
