MICRO - TREPHINATION GLAUCOMA SURGERY IN NIGERIANS: A PRELIMINARY REPORT

This is a preliminary report on eleven serial eyes that had micro-trephination glaucoma surgery at University of Benin Teaching Hospital and DDS Eye Surgery, Benin City between January 1995 and December 1998. Out of these, seven eyes had successful intra-ocu1ar pressure reduction with average reduction ranging from 6mmHg to 17mmHg while four eyes had unsatisfactory intra-ocular pressure reduction with average being 2mmHg. The complications encountered were very minimal.

COMPLIANCE WITH NEW DRUGS IN GLAUCOMA THERAPY IN BENIN CITY, NIGERIA

Objective: To determine the compliance rate, reasons for default and factors affecting compliance with new drugs in glaucoma therapy.
Met,hod: Fifty-six new patients on medical therapy with the recent drugs for primary open-angle glaucoma were followed-up for a minimum duration of 3 months and a maximum of 9 months. The number of drug doses missed per week as well as the reasons for default were recorded. Compliant and non-compliant patients were also compared in terms of prescribed treatment and personal characteristics

ACCEPTABILITY OF SURGERY AS INITIAL TREATMENT FOR PRIMARY OPEN ANGLE GLAUCOMA

One hundred and fifty-four new glaucoma patients at the University Of Benin Teaching Hospital were interviewed to determine the acceptance of surgery, reasons for refusal, and factors affecting acceptability of surgery as an initial treatment option. Fifty patients (32.5%) accepted surgery while eighty-nine (57.8%) refused.

Prevalence and causes of blindness in Otibho Okhae Teaching Hospital, Irrua, Edo State, Nigeria.

PURPOSE: This hospital- based study was aimed at providing baseline information on the causes of blindness in the locality.
METHODS: The case notes of all new patients attending the eye clinic of Otibho Okhae Teaching Hospital, Irrua, Edo State, Nigeria, over a six year period (January 1995-December 2000) were retrieved and analyzed.
