Tracheal intubation in obstetrics: Incidence of difficulty among various grades of anaesthetists

Faculty:
School of Medicine

Eighty-three patients scheduled for caesarean section were prospectively studied to determine the level of difficult laryngoscopic tracheal intubation among anaesthetists of various grades. A standardized questionnaire detailing demographics, preoperative airway assessment, laryngoscopic view, the number of attempts and the status of the laryngoscopist was completed for each patient. The overall incidence of difficult laryngoscopic tracheal intubation was 8.4%.

The use of simple diffusion tube samplers for the measurement of nitrogen dioxide in an operating room using nitrogen oxide as an anaesthetic

Faculty:
Physical Sciences

Estimates have been made of the amounts of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in the operating room of University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) where nitrous oxide (N2O) a potential source of NO is used as an anaesthetic agent Measurements were made using palmes diffusion tubes, a device which is capable of taking samples of NO2 gas from the atmosphere through diffusion or permeation of this compound to the interior and subsequently trapping it by means of adsorption on reactive material, but which does not involve the active movement of the gas through the sampler.

Pharmacoeconomic evaluation of general anaesthesia and subarachnoid block for elective caesarean section

Faculty:
School of Medicine

To encourage a logical and cost effective selection of anaesthetic technique for elective caesarean section, retrospective analysis of the types of anaesthesia for elective surgical delivery was conducted. The patients who had caesarean section over a year were identified. The perioperative record for each patient was reviewed to determine quantity of anaesthetic drugs, fluid therapy and other adjuvant medications. Resource consumption was then established for each patient. During the one year period, 51 patients had elective caesarean section.

Negative pressure pulmonary oedema following tracheal tube obstruction in a paediatric patient: a preventable anaesthesia related morbidity.

Faculty:
School of Medicine

The purpose of this study is to describe negative pressure pulmonary oedema due to undetected tracheal tube obstruction in a paediatric patient. A healthy 6 week-old scheduled for release of tongue-tie under general anaesthesia was noticed to be diagnosed at the preparation of the surgical site. The patient was quickly assessed, and ventilation with 100% oxygen was commenced. The heart sounds were still present. Two minutes later, pink frothy secretion was noticed in the lumen of the tracheal tube.

Factors associated with anaesthesia related maternal mortality in a tertiary hospital in Nigeria

Faculty:
School of Medicine

Maternal mortality related to anaesthesia is low compared with that resulting from obstetric factors in developed countries. The role of anaesthesia in maternal mortality in developing countries is obscure. The purposes of this study were to determine the incidence of maternal mortality related to anaesthesia, to analyse the causes and to suggest measures to improve anaesthetic safety for parturients.

Experience with ambulatory anaesthesia in gynaecological patients

Faculty:
School of Medicine

Ambulatory surgical care is becoming a common feature in Nigeria. Reports on the role of anaesthesia on outcome of surgery in ambulatory setting are rather scanty. In a 24-month period all patients who had gynaecological operations on ambulatory setting were identified and their hospital records reviewed. Sociodemographic characteristics, intraoperative variables, postoperative outcome and postoperative pain management were studied. A total of 28 patients had anaesthesia for various gynaecological procedures.

What Impressions do Medical Students of the University of Benin have about Anaesthesia and Anesthesiologists

A survey on the impressions 500level medical students of the University of Benin have about Anaesthesia and Anaesthesiologists was carried out from May to August 1999. The survey showed the mean age of the students to be 25.3years and a male to female ratio of 3:1. The study also showed that 170 (85.5%) of the students were unaware of the scope of Anaesthesia before the posting. After the posting, this figure decreased to 58 (34.5%) (x2 = 11.7, p< 0.05, df = 2).

Problems with the Management of A Case of Phaeochromocytoma: Case Report

A 29-year-old woman was referred from Jos University Teaching Hospital (J.U.T.H) with a provisional diagnosis of phaeochromcytoma. She had presented with recurrent headaches, palpitations, excessive sweating, dizziness, syncope and hypertension. She was treated with phenoxybenzamine and propranolol for six weeks before the drugs were discontinued. This followed conflicting results of investigations done. The return of persistent and severe symptoms led to recommencement of the drugs and surgical intervention after four weeks.

Case study – cardiopulmonary resuscitation in patients with ectopic pregnancy and HIV

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was carried out in a 32-year old with ectopic pregnancy and unwitnessed cardiac arrest. She was incidentally found to be HIV positive. Universal precautionary measures were observed during the resuscitation of the patients.

Awareness of the Scope of Anaesthesia as a specialty among Anaesthetists and their attitudes to Anaesthesia.

A survey of awareness about the scope and attitudes towards anaesthesia among anaesthetists was carried out in three tertiary institutions in Nigeria. This was done by self-administered questionnaires distributed to the anaesthetists. The results of the study showed a mean age of 36 years and a male preponderance among the anesthetists. 57.2% of the anaesthetists were unaware or had limited knowledge of the scope of anaesthesia prior to training. Only 8.6% of the anaesthetists joined the specialty out of the interest to develop anaesthesia and save lives.
