Growth and sporophore yield in strain Pt-Omon 13 of Pleurotus tuberregium (Fr) Singer on substrates made of waste paper (WP), plantain peelings (PP) and different combination of WP and PP was investigated. Sporophores were produced on substrates and substrate combinations tested. A substrate combination containing 80% by weight of waste paper gave the highest sporophore yield, at 43.78 ± 5.1 (Fresh weight) per 100g.

Lentinus squarrosulum (Mont.) Singer was cultivated on the sawdust of five economic tropical tree species. The sawdust of the following trees namely; Celtis sp, Guera cedrata, Nesogordenia papaverifera and Brachystegia nigerica; were collected during processing at the sawmill. The pure culture of the mushroom used in this study was that of strain. LS001UBNIG obtained from the mushroom bank of the Botany department, University of Benin, Benin City Nigeria. This paper addresses the discrimination against women on cultural grounds. The issues of human and women’s rights in African countries have always been complex. This is so not because of a lack of recognition of these rights, but rather, because of cultural barriers and practices that have made the realization of these rights a rather more difficult task in Africa than is the case in the western world. These cultural barriers are termed cultural authoritarianism within the context of this paper.

The incidence of tuberculosis has declined worldwide with increased health education, improved standard of living and immunization programmes. With the HIV-AIDS pandemic, however, there has been an increase in the number of cases reported. Even at that, cutaneous tuberculosis is rare in large dermatology clinics1-4. Although tuberculosis is now uncommon in developed cities in Nigeria, it must be recognized and promptly treated among the underprivileged and the immunocompromised5.

Agricultural waste generated from pilled cassava tubers contribute significantly to pollution of the environment. In this study, we investigated the potential genotoxic effects of the effluents obtained from the processing of cassava tubers into three popular Nigerian cassava meals; garri, lafun and akpu using the modified Allium cepa assay. A series of 10 onion bulbs were cultivated in 0.001, 0.01, 0.1, 1.0 and 10% concentrations (effluents, v/v) of each of the test samples (garri, lafun and akpu).

Dental caries and myopia have been suggested to be influenced by a defect in collagen. Dental caries was quantified and refractive status determined among 60 young adult subjects with a history of dental caries. The subjects were further divided into myopes and non-myopes. A significant difference was found in the number of carious teeth in the myopes and non-myopes (z =3.15 p< 0.05).

Previous investigators could not account for the factors causing the initial decline between the first and subsequent responses. They rather had neglected the first few responses or the first concentration response curve (CRC) in the name of allowing the tissue to stabilize. The second or even the third CRC is often taken to represent the control curve for the analysis of drugs.

The Nigerian construction industry is beset with many problems, such as uncompleted projects and poor quality of work. Also the level of productivity is low, especially in projects handled by indigenous contractors.Investigation into the causes has identified two sets of variables termed structural and systemic, as being responsible. Structural variables which are inherently related to the conditions and practices within a given environment, were found be controllable, if special provisions can be made within the conditions of contract.

This paper establishes a direct relationship between a design and maintenance and contends that most maintenance problems can be affected through the initial design. Thus it suggests that most of our current maintenance problems arise from past defective judgments on design and construction issues.
