CAFFEINE AND INTRAOCULAR PRESSURE IN A NIGERIAN POPULATION

Faculty:
Life Sciences

Purpose: Caffeine is widely consumed as kola nuts and in other products in sub Saharan Africa.

We examined the acute effect of caffeine on the intraocular pressures of healthy Nigerian volunteers between the ages of 20 and 27 years.
Methods: Intraocular pressure and blood pressure were measured 0, 30, 60, and 90 minutes after the ingestion of coffee by two groups of participants, namely the ex perimental (caffeinated coffee) and control (decaffeinated coffee) groups.

CALCIUM AND MAGNESIUM CONCENTRATIONS IN SWEAT OF NORMAL NIGERIAN MEN SWEATING UNDER HEAT AND EXERCISE CONDITIONS

Since calcium and magnesium are essential to the body’s needs, their input and output are generally balanced by their dietary intake and their loss through the excretory organs. This study investigated the concentrations of calcium and magnesium in the sweat excreted from normal Nigerian men sweating under raised temperature or during exercise heat and exercise conditions.

CALCIUM-SENSITIVITY AND SMOOTH MUSCLE CONTRACTION IN THE ISOLATED PERFUSED RAT TAIL ARTERY

Desensitisation and the effects of Bay K 8644 and nifedipine on the calciumsensitivity of smooth muscle contraction were studied in the isolated perfused rat tail artery, employing the activators noradrenaline (NA) (3μM) and potassium
chloride (KCI) (100mM). Experiments were conducted in Ca2+ - buffered saline. Activators were added when [Ca2+]free was low (1μM) and then [Ca2+]free was increased stepwise to give a Ca2+ concentration/response curve (CRC).

CAN TIGHT NECKTIE BE A RISK FACTOR IN DEVELOPMENT AND PROGRESSION OF PRIMARY-OPEN ANGLE GLAUCOMA (POAG)

Faculty:
Life Sciences

Background Information: Tight neckties have been documented to alter intraocular pressure (lOP) and thus may be a risk factor in the development and progression of primary open angle glaucoma (POAG). Many professionals and white-collar jobs require the use of neck ties for the greater part of the day. Tight necktie wearers are unaware of its effect on intraocular pressure and glaucoma.

CAPITAL FORMATION AMONGST SMALL MANUFACTURING FIRMS IN A DEVELOPING ECONOMY- THE NIGERIAN CASE

Faculty:
Management Sciences

This research on small rapidly growing firms in developing countries further reinforces the well known fact that small enterprises still rely on personal resources of their proprietors and short-term loans and bank overdrafts to finance their operations.

Cardiac troponin T as a marker of myocardial injury in a group of asphyxiated African neonates

Background: In caucasian newborns, troponin T (cTnT) is a specific marker for myocardial injury in perinatal asphyxia. This is the first such study in negroid neonates.

CARDIO-RESPIRATORY CHANGES IN NIGERIANS SWEATING UNDER HEAT AND EXERCISE CONDITIONS

Active vasodilatation of coetaneous blood vessels and increased sweating have been observed to be the two main adjustments to heat stress in man. And acclimatization to work in the heat is a rapid and drastic process as revealed in
the generalized decrease in heart rate, core temperature (Tcore), skin temperature (Tskin) and the rise in sweat rate at a given Tcore and Tskin.

Cardiovascular responses to blood transfusion in children with anemic heart failure

Introduction: This study evaluated the cardiovascular responses to blood transfusion in children with anemic heart failure using mostly clinical parameters.

CAREER CHOICE IN ENGINEERING: THE INFLUENCE OF PEERS AND PARENTS: IMPLICATION FOR COUNSELLING

Faculty:
Education

This study was designed to investigate the relationship between parental and peer group influence on career choice in engineering profession among adolescents. The research design adopted was correlational because it sought to establish the relationship between the independent variable and the dependent variable. One research question and one hypothesis were formulated to guide the study. Three research instruments i.e.

CAREER CHOICE IN MEDICINE: THE INFLUENCE OF PEERS AND PARENTS. IMPLICATION FOR COUNSELLING

Faculty:
Education

The study examined the role of peers and parental influence on career choice in medicine. One research hypothesis was formulated to guide the study. Three research instruments were used; they are: the students occupational clusters preference scale (OCPS), peer pressure assessment scale (PPAS) and the parental influence assessment inventory (PIAI). Two private and two public schools were randomly selected for the study. Twenty-five respondents were randomly selected from each of the schools giving a total of a hundred respondents. Data were recorded or collected from each respondent.

CASE LAW PRINCIPLES AND THE DOCTRINE OF JUDICIAL PRECEDENT IN SOCIO – LEGAL RESEARCH

Faculty:
School of Medicine

Two hundred and seventy-eight (278) consecutive cataract extractions, (Intracapsular and Extracapsular extraction) in 229 patients were carried out in a 30 months period (Jan. 1986-June 1988) at the University Of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin City (UBTH), Nigeria 114 of these were carried out by Registrar and Senior Registrar grade ophthalmology Residents while the remaining 164 were by Consultant Ophthalmologists.

CATARACT SURGERY OUTPUT AND COST OF HSPITALIZATION FOR CATARACT SURGERY IN UBTH

Faculty:
School of Medicine

Cataract is the most common cause of curable blindness in Nigeria1, 2. Nigeria has an overall population of approximately 110 million with a blindness prevalence rate of 1%. Cataract is responsible for 30 – 60% of the blindness1, 2. A great deal of blindness prevention activity should therefore centre around cataract surgery if we are to clear out cataract back log of over ½ individuals. Only 106 cataract surgeries were performed in the 24 months reviewed.

Faculty:
School of Medicine

The unipolar Heamiarthroplasty designs introduced by Thompson and Moore, have been the popular choice for femoral neck fractures in elderly patients. Some implant related complications were observed to be more severe or accentuated in the more active and mobile elderly. The introduction of the Bipolar type was meant to reduce such complications. Presented is a 5 year report on our experience with the bipolar implant at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH).

Different methods of storing coconut were examined to determine their effects on changes in nut water and endosperm. The first preliminary experiment was carried out for 72 days and the second for 8 months. The results showed that the nuts generally dried up (without liquid endosperm) after 5 months of storage but those stored in bags and watered, retained liquid endosperm for 6 months.

Characteristics of Nigerian children with Human immunodeficiency virus and Tuberculosis co-infection

The burden of tuberculosis in children is not as well documented as that in adults due to the difficulties in diagnosis. This difficulty is more in HIV/TB coinfection hence the characteristics of coinfected children has also not been extensively documented. This study describes the characteristics of Nigerian children who are coinfected with HIV and TB.

Characterization and Industrial potential of Leucaena leucocephala seed oil

Faculty:
Life Sciences

Seed of Leucaena leucocephala were analyzed to determine the oil content and physiochemical characteristics of the oil. The results obtained are compared with the characteristics of known oils. The iodine value of the oil (107 – 158) and saponification value in the range of 231 – 273mg KOH compared closely with those of known drying oils of high unsaturation level with potentials for the preparation of soap and the formulation of surface coating. The  peroxide value and acid values show close comparison with the refractive index (1.468).
