Intestinal helminthiasis in children with chronic neurological disorders in Benin City, Nigeria: intensity and behavioral risk factors.

Background: Behavioral aberrations such as nail biting, finger sucking, and pica have been postulated as risk factors that enhance helminths ova transmission. These aberrations may present commonly in children with chronic neurological disorders and predispose them to heavy intensity of intestinal helminthiasis. This comparative cross-sectional study was to determine the prevalence, intensity, and behavioral risk factors for intestinal helminthiasis in children with chronic neurological disorders and apparently healthy controls.

Intraoperative blood transfusion among adult surgical patients in a tertiary hospital in Benin City, Nigeria

This retrospective study was designed to audit the pattern of intraoerative whole blood transfusion among surgical patients over a two-year period. Data were collected on the rate of intra-operative transfusion, estimated blood loss, units of blood transfused, pattern of use of autologous blood and circumstance of the surgery. Fifteen percent of the surgical population had blood transfusion in the intraoperative period. Over half of the patients (52.3%) received single unit transfusion. Preoperative anaemia was seen in 14.9% of the population.

INVESTIGATION OF TRACE METALS IN THE TISSUES OF A FRESHWATER FISH (Crysichthys nigrodigitatus) FROM THE IKPOBA RIVER DAM, BENIN CITY NIGERIA

The concentrations of zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), lead (Pb) and chromium (Cr) were evaluated in whole fish, muscle, liver and gills of the benthic fresh water fish, Crysichthys nigrodigitatus, from Ikpoba River Dam in Benin City, Nigeria, by atomic absorption spectrometric technique. The concentrations of the aforementioned trace metals were also determined in water and sediment.

Investigations on the fishing practices in Ekenwan area of Ovia North-East Local Government area of Edo State, Nigeria.

A community-based study was carried out among the Izon-speaking fishermen and women in Ekenwan Village in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State, Nigeria. The main objectives were to determine the extent of the use of obnoxious fishing methods and suggest control measures to enable the community practice sustainable fishing method. The results of the study revealed gross over fishing with all year-round fishing activities, including the widespread use of small nets less than 2 inches and use of dynamites as explosives to harvest fish.

INVESTMENT IN GIRL CHILD AND WOMEN EDUCATION

The education of the girl child and women has been a topic of endless discussion in national and international education conferences. In pressing further the problem of girl child education, the UNESCO, UNICEF, and allied agencies, have reached agreement with nations on how to implement education for all. The paper discussed the position of Nigeria in equalizing educational opportunities and removing the gap that has existed between boys’ and girls’ education.

IS THE CASSAVA (MAIHOT ESCULENTA) PRODUCT, GARRI, AN AETIOPATHOGENIC FACTOR IN LIMB MALFORMATION

We investigated the aetiopathological significance of garri a cassava (Manihot esculenta) based food incorporated in the regular diet of 16 mothers whose babies presented in University of Benin Teaching Hospital with varying severe congenital limb malformations. The pattern of these malformations had earlier been documented. The mothers who were from the coastal villages of the Niger-Delta region of Nigeria were predominantly garri makers and virtually subsisted on garri forms for their daily diets, even during pregnancy.

ISOLATION AND CHRACTERIZATION OF 3-CARBOMETHOXYPYRIDINE FROM THE LEAVES OF PYRENACANTHA STAUDTII HUTCH AND DALZ ICACINACEAE

Pyrenacantha staudtii is a medicinal plant used widely in the West African sub-region particularly in Nigeria for the treatment of threatened abortion and dysmenorrea. This study reports for the first time the chemical isolation and chraraterization of 3- carbomethoxypyridine from the active fractions of the methanolic extract of Pyrenacantha staudtii leaves.

ISOLATION AND CHRACTERIZATION OF HEXAHYDROX FROM PYRENACANTHA STAUDTII HUTCH LEAF AND EFFECT ON ISOLATED RAT UTERUS

The ethnomedicinal use of Pyrenacantha staudtii leaf as remedy against threatened abortion was evaluated through activity guided fractionation techniques on rat isolated uterus in our earlier study.One of the biologically active fraction was subjeccetd to reversed phase lobar column C-18 chromatography with different solvent systems and other chromatographic methods. The structure of the pure compound isolated was characterized by spectroscopic techniques such as IR, NMR, MS and elemental analysis.

Knowledge, attitude and practice of private medical practitioners in Calabar towards post-abortion care

This study examined the knowledge, attitude and practice of private medical practitioners in Calabar on abortion, post-abortion case and post-abortion family planning. Forty eight private practitioners who were proprietors of private
clinics in the city were interviewed using a structured questionnaire. The results showed that 22.9% of the doctors routinely terminate unwanted pregnancies when requested to do so by women, while 83.3% of them treat women who experience complications of unsafe abortion.

Knowledge, attitudes and experiences of sex trafficking by young women in Benin City, South-South Nigeria

Benin City, the headquarters of Edo State, is known to have one of the highest rates of international sex trafficking of young women in Nigeria. This study was designed to determine the knowledge, attitudes and experiences of young women in Benin City, towards international sex trafficking. A random household sample of 1456 women aged
15-25 years was interviewed with a structured questionnaire that elicited information on women's experiences of, and attitudes towards international sex trafficking.

LARVICIDAL  PROPERTIES OF THE VOLATILE OIL OF AGERATUM  CONYZOIDES L. (COMPOSITAE) AGAINST CULEX SPECIE MOSQUITO  LARVAE

The fresh leaves of Ageratum conyzoides afforded a pale yellow volatile oil of 0.08% yield, density of 1.0?ml and a refractive index of 1.55. Both the volatile oil and its isolated major constituent (precocene 1) produced remarkable larvicidal activities on larvae of Culex specie mosquito. While the volatile oil produced 100% mortality at a dose level of 15µl, 10µl of the precocene 1 gave 100% mortality. The results confirmed a wider use of A. conyzoides volatile oil an insecticide.

Limnological studies of some springs in Southern Nigeria

Samples were collected during the dry (February), dry-wet (May), wet (July) wet-dry (October) periods in Osu, Wagbafeleme, Urumena, Ifege  and Makeke springs. Water samples were collected directly into clean  plastic containers while algal samples were collected from water column as well as substrate such as leaves, sticks and stones. The physical and chemical characteristics of the water revealed that they were slightly acidic to circumneutral (5.6 – 7.5) and low (5.2µ Scm-1) to high (502µ S cm-1) in ionic composition.

Limnological studies of two contrasting but closely linked springs in Nigeria, West Africa

n account is presented of the chemistry and algal flora of two streams in Ekiti State, Nigeria. The two streams, one of which is much warmer than the other are separated upstream but subsequently merge. A comparison of the springs revealed that while they differed markedly in temperature, colour, turbidity, conductivity, solids, total alkalinity, total hardness, Ca, SiO3, SO4, Mg, Cl -  and dissolved oxygen, they showed some similarities in pH, Fe, Na, K, PO4 and NO3.
