EFFECTS OF BAY K 8644 AND NIFEDIPINE ON THE CALCIUM CONCENTRATION-RESPONSE CURVE AND ON DESENSITIZATION OF THE RAT TAIL ARTERY

It has been shown that desensitization of the responses of vascular smooth muscle could occur if the physiological saline composition is altered. The extent to which Bay K 8644 and nifedipine affect the calcium responses of a vascular
smooth muscle and their effects on desensitized tissue responses are yet to be quantified and this is what this study aims at doing on calcium-mediated responses in the rat tail artery and on the desensitization of the responses of the

EFFECTS OF DIFFERENT FORMS AND MODES OF APPLICATION OF CHICKEN MANURE ON GROWTH PERFORMANCE OF OREOCHROMIS NILOTICUS

Faculty:

The effect of different forms of and mode of application of chicken manure on the growth rate of Oreochromis niloticus was compared. The forms and modes included Wet Chicken Manure broadcasted into culture water, wet Chicken Manure tied in jute bags and dry Chicken Manure broadcasted into pond. The culture was carried out in 25 litres plastic bowls for a period of 10 weeks.

Agriculture

Clariid catfish hybrid (Clarias gariepinus x Heterobranchus bidorsalis) fingerlings were reared in outdoor concrete tanks for a 24-week experiment period.  The concrete tanks measured 2.24 x 1.79 x 0.96m and were filled with water to a depth of 0.77m.The study was conducted using four tanks in a completely randomized design with treatment (feeding frequency) replicated twice.

Effects of Low Carbohydrate High Fat Nigerian-Like Diet on Biochemical Indices in Rabbits

Faculty:
Education

The effects of a low carbohydrate high fat Nigerian like diet on lipoprotein levels, serum electrolytes, liver and renal functions were investigated. The diet consist of 28% carbohydrate and 35% fat as percentage of total energy in a wholly compounded form. Twelve rabbits were randomly divided into two groups. The groups were: Group I that was fed the control diet and the second group II were fed with the low carbohydrate high fat diet. At the end of eight weeks, biochemical analyses were done on blood samples of the animals.

EFFECTS OF OXYGEN ON THE RAT TAIL ARTERY

The general procedure for maintaining isolated tissues in vitro is to equilibrate at atmospheric pressure, with a gas mixture of high oxygen content, such as 100% or where CO2 / bicarbonate buffering is used, 95% O2 is employed. But in a classical resistance vessel, such as the rat tail artery, little attention has been paid to the difference between normoxia of 16% and hyperoxia of 90% O2 .

Effects of sociodemographic factors and maternal anthropometry

Background: The size of the newborn at birth is affected by maternal nutrition. It is therefore conceivable that birth weight would also be influenced by maternal anthropometry which in turn, is often influenced by maternal nutrition and socio-economic factors. In this study, the effects of maternal anthropometry and socio-demographic factors on the newborn weight, length, and occipito-frontal circumference (OFC), were evaluated.

EFFECTS OF STOCKING DENSITY ON SURVIVAL AND GROWTH OF FRY OF CLARIID CATFISH HYBRID

Faculty:
Agriculture

Fry of hybrid clariid catfishes, Clarias gariepinus x Heterobranchus bidorsalis, were reared at four densities in indoor aquaria to evaluate the effects of stocking density on survival, growth and feed utilization.  Fish (mean weight 0.84g) were stocked into 41-L aquaria containing 12L of water at rates of 11, 22, 33, and 44 fish per aquarium (978, 1956, 2933 and 3911 fish/m3) respectively.  Each treatment was replicated three times.

EFFECTS OF TEMPERATURE AND EXERCISE ON SWEAT RATE AND SWEAT ELECTROLYTE LOSS IN NIGERIANS

Sweat rate and sweat electrolyte loss were studied in 32 male Nigerians. Each subject was studied thrice at room temperature (RT) of 270C+20C and a relative humidity (RH) of 70+5%; at 370C and RH 90+5%; and during exercise at
RT0C+20C and RH 70 %. Sweat was collected simultaneously from the forehead and forearm using the filter paper disc technique.

EFFECTS OF TOPICAL ASCORBIC ACID ON CORNEAL ULCERATION INDUCED BY ALKALI BURN

Faculty:
Life Sciences

Earlier studies have shown that alkaline injuries are especially damaging to the corneal structure with corneal ulcerations as comnon occurrence after significant alkali burns, and this is due to collagenolytic enzymes (collagenase) secreted by the cornea in response to the presence of the chemical; causing collagen loss. This has necessitated treatment using ascorbic acid, a collagenase inhibitor. 20 male and female rabbits (1.0-2.5kg body weight) were randomly divided into 2 groups of 10 each.
