Development of FeO. TiO2 - SiO2 – CaCO3 system as a welding flux

Faculty:
Engineering

Using local raw materials, various metal-arc welding fluxes were formulated. A ternary system of FeO. TiO2-SiO2-CaCO3 gave satisfactory results. Average values of 546 N/mm2 ultimate tensile strength and 10% elongation were obtained from all-weld metal tensile specimens.

Fifteen taxa of diatoms are listed in this report. For each taxon, its dimensions, ecology and distribution in various parts of Nigeria and elsewhere in West Africa are indicated. It constitutes a vital contribution towards enumeration of phytoplankton in Nigeria which is hitherto scarce.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE SWEATING CHARACTERISTICS OF MEN AND WOMEN OF TROPICAL HUMID CLIMATES DURING MODERATE EXERCISE

Imposition of heat loads upon an average individual during exercise, as a result of the production of heat in the contracting muscles, can be in excess of 600 – 800W for extended periods and in excess of 1000W for limited periods and this can raise the body core temperature by 10C every 5 to 8 minute and increase of more than 3.00C can lead to central nervous system dysfunction, circulatory failure and eventually, irreversible tissue damage and death.

DIFFERENTIAL EFFECTIVENESS OF SYSTEMATIC DESENSITIZATION AND RATIONAL EMOTIVE THERAPY IN THE REDUCTION OF TEST ANXIETY

Faculty:
Education

This study was designed to investigate the  differential effectiveness of Systematic Desensitisation (SD) and Rational Emotive  Therapy (RET) in the reduction of test anxiety. An experimental design was used to compare post-test scores of the treatment groups with those of an attention placebo group. A total of 86 Senior Secondary class one (SSI) students were involved in the analysis.

Dip patterns in asthmatic and non-asthmatic children in Benin-city, Nigeria

Abstract

Objective: Although the calibre of the airway is kept patent by multifactorial control system, there is evidence that the calibre of the bronchi varies with time of the day in normal subjects. Asthma is now known to be a chronic inflam¬matory disease and this chronic in-flammation causes hyperreactivity and lability in the airway. Therefore, asthma is characterised as a disease where respiratory symptoms are based on large variation in airway calibre leading to variations in resis¬tance to airflow over a short period of time.

Diphtheria in Nigeria:Is there resurgence?

Reported cases of diphtheria from Nigeria have been reducing since the beginning of the millennium even though coverage with diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus (DPT) vaccine has only been low to moderate. Accordingly only sporadic cases of diphtheria have been managed in the past in our hospital. However the occurrence of five cases in the period of one year raises questions on the status of diphtheria control in Nigeria. We present the clinical and sociodemographic features of the cases and discuss the implications of a rising incidence of diphtheria.

Diphtheria mortality in Nigeria: the need to stock Diphtheria antitoxin

Faculty:
Education

Introduction: Diphtheria had been a major of cause of childhood mortality until the advent of an effective vaccine. Even in Nigeria with low to moderate coverage with the third dose of DPT the number of reported cases of diphtheria had been reducing. However, in a recent report we noted an increase in the incidence of diphtheria. The mainstay of management of diphtheria is the Diphtheria antitoxin. Diphtheria antitoxin is not available in Nigeria. We present the mortalities from diphtheria to highlight the need to stock the diphtheria antitoxin.
