Trends in Regional Anesthesia for Cesarean Section at University of Benin Teaching Hospital

This study was undertaken to evaluate the trend of practice regional anaesthesia for caesarean section in a tertiary hospital. The obstetric operating room records were reviewed for a fourteen year period: January 1986 to December 1999. The anaesthetic techniques for caesarean section were noted as well as the level of training of the attending anaesthetist. A total of 3451 patients were delivered by caesarean section in the University of Benin Teaching Hospital during the 14- year period under review. 93.4% (n=3224) had caesarean section under general anaesthesia and 6.6% (n=227) had regional anaesthesia.
