A SURVEY OF INSECT FAUNA ASSOCIATED WITH THREE CULTIVARS OF PIGEON PEAS (CAJANUS CAJAN L.) IN BENIN CITY, SOUTHERN NIGERIA

A survey of insect species associated with eultivars of pigeon (Cqjanus cajan L.) was conducted in Benin City, Southern Nigeria for a two year period. This was to ascertain the various insect species contributing to the pigeon pea damage in this region. Of the 31 insects identified that infests the pigeon peas, only a few of them causes severe damage and grain yield loss. Those that caused significant damage included Aphis craccivora and Empoasea fabae which fed on the leaves, the flower-feeding thrip  megalurothrips sjosytedti  and the pod-slicking bug.
