RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES OF INMATES OF NIGERIAN PRISONS: A SURVEY OF PRISONS IN EDO/DELTA STATES
This survey focuses on existing facilities and personnel for exercise and recreation in the prisons in Edo and Delta States of Nigeria. Data indicate that soccer fields top the list of facilities available. This should be taken with some caution, as this does not mean real soccer fields but available open spaces without goal posts and nets. This is following by indoor games which also do not need any facilities as inmates could provide their own Ludo, card and draft. The study shows that basic facilities for recreational activities were grossly inadequate despite the fact that inmates need recreational activities to be in good physical and emotional condition. As expected, inmates generally show interest in recreational activities and soccer which is a popular sport all over the world is also preferred by most inmates.
