Grassroot Sport in Nigeria: Past, Present and Future

The paper examines the place of sports in national development. It traces the history of grassroot sports in Nigeria from the pre-colonial period to post independent Nigeria. The factors that fostered the development of grassroot sports such as the empire day celebration and formation of sports club by commercial agencies and government department were discussed.
