A PRELIMINARY STUDY OF THE PROVISION AND PATRONAGE OF SOCIAL SERVICES IN BENIN CITY, NIGERIA

The paper examines the provision of social amenities by both government and private sectors and its patronage by urban populace in Benin City. Social services such as education, health, electricity, water supply and housing have been selected for study. The result demonstrates that although the government is the main supplier of electricity and water to the people, these services are not available most of the time.

CHALLENGES OF WOMEN PARTICIPATION IN CONTINUE HIGHER EDUCATION PROGRAMME: IMPLICATION FOR ADULT WOMEN COUNSELLING AND EDUCATION

This paper investigates the challenges or constraints of women in continuing higher education programme with particular focus on the B.Ed part-time programme of the University of Lagos. A simple survey research design was employed to explore the issue. A 15 item questionnaire supplemented with oral interview sessions provided the data used for the study. The study involved 150 randomly selected women in B.Ed part-time programme of the University of Lagos. The sample was drawn from across the three departments in the Faculty.

CONGENITAL PSEUDOARTHROSIS OF THE TIBIA: TREATEMENT BY INTRAMEDULLARY NAILING WITHOUT BONE GRAFT

Established Congenital Tibia Pseudarthrosis of the tibia 9CTP) has been treated surgically by primary bone graft and a variety of fixation methods, the aim being to achieve osseous union.

We report five cases of established CTP treated by a modification of the Patterson technique but without primary bone grafting 9(PBG) of the 5 patients, 4 of the sclerotic type treated by this modified technique achieved union in an average of six months and limb length shortening was less than 2.5cm.

PREVALENCE AND INTENSITY OF INTESTINAL HELMINTHIASIS IN CHILDREN LIVING IN ORPHANAGES IN BENIN CITY, NIGERIA

Background: Orphans may be envisaged to have sub-optimal care and may be predisposed to high worm burden. This study was undertaken to determine prevalence and intensity of intestinal helminthiasis in children living in orphanages in Benin City, Nigeria.

The effect of smoking on the chemical composition and keeping qualities of catfish heterobranchus bidorsalis using two energy generation sources

The smoking effects of two energy sources dried rubber wood and semi-dried rubber wood Hevea brassillensis on the chemical and keeping characteristics of Heterobranchus bidorsalis using the electronic oven as control was carried out. The experiment was conducted using the Altona smoking kiln. The experiment focused on the chemical differences; protein wise between fish smoked with dried rubber wood and that of semi-dried rubber wood.

Timeliness and completion rate of immunization among Nigerian children attending a clinic based immunization service

To achieve maximal protection against vaccine preventable diseases, a child should receive all immunizations within recommended intervals – fully ‘on time’. The clinic records of 512 Nigerian children were evaluated for timeliness of receipt of vaccines and the completion rates for the schedule. About 31% of the children presented after 4weeks of age for their first immunization while between 18.9% and 65% of children were delayed in the receipt of the various vaccines. Only 227(44.3%) children were fully immunized.

3-D CONTROL BASELINE FOR DEFORMATION STUDIES AT THE IKPOBA DAM

A network consisting of Braced quadrilateral and central figures with some overlapping diagonals was designed at the Ikpoba Dam site. From this network a braced quadrilateral was chosen as horizontal control baselines while the above quadrilateral together with an adjourning one were chosen as vertical control baseline.

A 4 YEAR REVIEW OF NEONATAL OUTCOME AT THE UNIVERSITY OF BENIN TEACHING HOSPITAL, BENIN CITY

Background: Neonatal morbidity and mortality rates reflect a nation's socio-economic status, the efficiency and effectiveness of health care services. This important indicator is useful in planning for improved health­care delivery. A four year review of neonatal outcome was therefore conducted in the special care baby Unit (SCBU) of University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH).

A case of Congenital Lobar Emphysema

A two month old boy was admitted to the paediatric ward of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Nigeria with tachypnoea and poor suckling from the 4th hour of life and fever, cough and dyspnoea of two weeks duration. There was no grunting. He was delivered at term via spontaneous vertex delivery in a rural secondary health facility where mother received routine antenatal care. No obstetric- ultrasound scan was done. Immediate post partum period was normal.

A checklist on perceived reasons for drop out was used in gathering information from the respondents. Sample size comprised of students who dropped out of school and later re-enrolled in four secondary schools in each of the states. Data were analyzed using percentages.

This study compared the estimated Maximal Oxygen Uptake (Max VO2)capacities of visually-impaired and sighted subjects. The investigation was necessary because of the pausity of literature on the Max VO2 levels of Nigerian

A comparison of methods for detection of phosphate limitation in microalgae

This paper presents the results of studies into the use of the emerging techniques of nutrient induced fluorescence transients (NIFTs) and Fourier Transform InfraRed (FTIR) spectroscopy to determine the nutrient status of microalgae. Four species of microalgae were grown under conditions where growth rate was P-limited or P-replete, and NIFT responses and FTIR spectra in response to the re-supply of P (as PO¾-) measured.
